Why do people hate meal planning?
A variety of reasons, of course.
- It’s work. Aren’t we all worked to death? Nobody wants to come home and do more work.
- It can be thought-intensive when you’re starting from scratch each week.
- Decision fatigue. We make so many decisions daily that we can’t stomach making another.
A basic 10-meal flow rotation list will help alleviate these issues. Yes, you do have to put in the work to make the list, but it’s just one time.
It’s less thought-intensive than making a weekly meal list because you’re just writing down the meals that you and your family eat regularly. Again, you’re doing it once, not repeatedly every week which is the real bonus.
Decision fatigue goes out the window when you have a ready-made list. The only decision is which of those meals you’re hungry for. This puts meal planning on auto-pilot.
What is Meal Flow Rotation?
It’s a simple system to take the guess work out of meal planning. It’s a list of rotating meals to work into your weekly meal plan. These are meals that you and your family already eat. They’re the basic building blocks.
This is not a rigid planning system. It’s made to allow you freedom. It doesn’t limit your choices because it’s a system built around how you live. It doesn’t limit your food choices either. It’s a tool to help your meal planning flow seamlessly and easily with the least amount of friction.
How to Build Your First 10-Meal Flow Rotation
First, write down you and your family’s favorite everyday meals.
I’m talking about the normal meals that you’d be willing to cook any day of the week. Nobody else is looking at this list so no one can judge you for it. It’s been you and God.
You like roasting a whole turkey on a Tuesday? Write it down.
You only have the energy for mac-n-cheese with cut up hot dogs? Write it down.
You hate cooking and eat Ramen once a week? Write it down.

Need more ideas?
Think in categories.
- Mexican-ish (Tacos, Burrito Bowls, Nachos)
- Italian-ish (Spaghetti, Alfredo, Pesto)
- Comfort Foods (Roast, Fried Chicken, Beef Stroganoff, Casseroles)
- Quick/Easy Meals (Frozen Pizza, Fish Sticks, Bagged Meals, Grilled Sandwiches)
- Breakfast for Dinner (Biscuits and Gravy, Scrambled Eggs, Breakfast Sandwiches)
- One pan meals (chili, stir fry, sheet pan meals)

If you still need more meal ideas, think in structure.
Protein + Vegetable + Carb
Some examples might be:
- Chicken + Mixed Veggies + Pasta Side
- Pork Chop + Spinach + Yellow Rice
- Hamburger Steaks + Green Beans + Mashed Potatoes
The possibilities are endless and customizable around what your family will eat and enjoy.
How To Customize for Your Family
This is where things get even easier. Think about how you and your family eat your dinners now.
Are you busy until 8pm on Tuesdays? Do you eat when you get home or on-the-go? If you wait to eat until you get home then slow cooker meals is the way to go, but if you normally eat on the go, then why not try making some wraps or sandwiches?
With your schedule in mind you can lay things out in a weekly pattern that works best for you. Even if the schedule changes every week, you have the tools to easily change it up to fit the week.
As life and circumstances change it’s super easy to change it up. Tastes change. Sometimes, we get burned out on a certain meal. No problem, just change up your rotation.
Find a new meal you love? Add it in.
There is flexibility in the use. If you only use it to choose 5 meals per week, then you eat out or get takeout one day, and eat dinner at Grandma’s once a week – your week has been easily planned.
We like to make new recipes and try new things so we often leave a day every week or two for a new recipe. Sometimes it’s just to revive an old recipe that we haven’t eaten in a long time too.

Using the FREE Printable Simply Unruffled Meal Flow Rotation and Weekly Meal Planners
We’ve made an easy Meal Flow Rotation to start filling in your rotation meals. All you’ve got to do is follow the steps above to your liking. First, fill in family favorites. If you can’t come up with 10 meals, then try thinking of foods in a certain category. If you still haven’t filled in 10 meals, then move on to the Protein + Vegetable + Carb method.
Once you’re done with that, it’s easy to plan your weekly meals in the Weekly Meal Planner. We’ve left space below each day of the week for notes on what type of meal or if it will be a busy day. Then you just fill in the meals from your Meal Flow Rotation. Simple, but effective.

Expanding the Meal Flow Rotation Later
The beautiful thing about this Meal Flow Rotation system is that it’s easily expandable. You can make a 15 or 20 meal rotation once you’ve gotten the hang of it.
You can add in a seasonal rotation to change things up when certain fruits and vegetables are in season. (Some foods just taste better when it’s cold outside. Am I right?!)
